Critique

Judge's Critique

Thank you to the hard working Four Counties Beagle Club for inviting me to judge at my first club open show where I had an excellent entry of beagles. Many thanks to the exhibitors for a lovely entry and to accept my decisions with good sportsmanship and grace. Special thanks must be mentioned to both my efficient stewards, Helen and Luke Johnston; and to Kath Parkin who kindly took the photographs.

DOGS

MLD (6,2) 1 Goldberg's Molesend Orlando (AI) JW, masculine faded tri portraying a clean outline both stood and on the move. Nicely angulated front and rear with a pleasing head. Well off for bone. Carries an excellent topline and stern well on the move. 2  McBain & Stevens Bondlea Layman. Another larger mould of hound who presents a pleasing picture. Lovely arched neck and deep chest with excellent return of rib. Powered around the ring with drive and enthusiasm.

LD (3) 1 Brannan's Rosanka Nolte, masculine head without coarseness and a long reaching neck into nicely angulated shoulders. Carries both his topline and stern well, moved with verve. Shown in hard and fit condition. RBD. 2 Hunt & Norris's Shercroft Apollo, another quality hound with clean lines and excellent angles. Shorter in loin than 1. Spot on coming and going. Would have liked to have seen this boy move with a little more impulsion today.

VD (3,1) 1 Brannan's Ch Ardvreck Caerlavarerock Von Dapperdawg ShCM; What a thrill it was to judge this 10 y/o dog today. He really shone the minute he stepped into the ring. Moderately built portraying a balanced picture; cleanest of lines. Lovely crest of neck flowing to well laid back shoulders. Very sound coming and going covering the ground with ease. BD & BVD. RBIS & BVIS. 2 Webster's Dialynne Numero Uno ShCM.  Gentle mannered expression with good leathers. Great pigment. Well ribbed back and a powerful loin. Super bone and neat feet. Enthusiastic mover, beautifully handled.

BITCHES

MPB (3) 1 Hill's Dapperdawg Miss Chief. Petite tri bitch with many virtues. Nicely angulated, level topline and correct stern. Lovely front for such a baby who moved with poise and purpose. 2. Brown's Raimex Reed Bunting. Pretty, feminine broken tri of good size. Good depth of chest and return of upper arm.

PB (8,1) 1 Craig's Davricard Hester. Feminine blanket dark tri of nice proportions. Lovely head shape with super leathers. Compact, smaller, correct mould of bitch who just proves that big doesn't always equal flashy. She covered the ground fabulously with style for such a youngster. 2 Jones' Clairdale Damia. An expressive t/w girl with super lines. Short coupling, neat feet and good tail carriage. Superb outline when stood. Good front especially on the move; shown in lovely condition.

JB (7,2) 1 Craig's Davricard Musetta. A beautiful bitch! This open mark tri is so elegant from head to toe. She is of correct size and ever so balanced. Clean, well flawed head with a kind eye; super neck leading into correct shoulders. Could have watched her all day when moving. Effortless free stride with accurate footfalls in all directions. 2 Goldberg's Molesend Query. Feminine broken tri bitch with a good length of neck and short coupling. Excellent quarters used to her advantage on the move.

NB (6) 1 Dean's Gempeni Ballet. Broken tri with an attractive feminine head. Graceful leathers and expressive eye. Super length of neck leading to a good lay back of shoulder. Great front when coming on for such a young hound. 2 Dawson's Rundle Eclipse. Suffered a freight to begin with but showed good temperament to bounce back with conviction. Well laid back shoulders and depth of chest. Powerful quarters using them to her advantage to drive around the ring.

GB (9,1) 1 Brannan's Benruadh Abertay. Sound mover who pushed hard in the challenge.  Not the flashiest of bitches, however so moderate and could go all day. An excellent lay back of shoulder and matching quarters allowing great reach and drive. 2 Hunt, Norris & Carmichael's Shercroft Arina, having judged this bitch before as a pup, I was really impressed on how well she has matured since. T/W mottle with soft gentle expression and well flewed. Neat front with tight elbows. Well ribbed back and short loin. Good quarters. Moved out well.

PGB (4,2) 1 Arden's Madika Spot On JW. What a pretty picture this girl makes on the stack and portrays a picture of such balance. Elegant long neck flowing into well laid back shoulders and a level topline. Covers the ground with good reach and drive. 2 Webster's Monjoon Lily of the Valleys for Houndscoast. T/W bitch shown in hard fit condition, shown to her advantage. Super deep chest, powerful loin, and excellent quarters. Purposeful mover.

MLB (8,3) 1 Jones' Clairdale Willowmena ShCM. This girl really showed her best today giving all she had on the move. Clean outline showing her good angles, shorter in loin than 2. Super sound front and back. 2 Goldberg's Broadshore Vedette at Molesend. Pretty expression detailed by her lovely pigment. Good length of neck. Excellent bend of stifle and hocks well let down. Another with good front movement.

LB (2) 1 Dean's Gempeni Flower Girl JW ShCM. A quality bitch who covers the ground well. Good length of neck and return of upper arm. Deep chest and well ribbed back. Handled so well. 2 Hunt's Bondlea Dove. Tri bitch of smaller build. Well pigmented head with a soft eye. Straight front and well let down hocks. Moved out well.

OB (6,2) 11 Brown's Raimex Rowanberry. This bitch took me by surprise today and pleased to have awarded her RBB. Lovely to go over her on the table to feel her correct angles and overall balance. She has a pretty head with a very soft expression. So clean fore and aft with a super driving side gait. Her enthusiasm on the move was effortless and moderate, ran out of steam when challenging for RBIS. 2 Woodcock's Roddwood Melody ShCM. An honest bitch who is so moderate in all directions. Quality neck and shoulders coupled with her well-muscled quarters. Moved out with verve.

VB (9) Super class to judge. 1 Brown's Raimex Rowanberry. 2 Goldberg's Newlin Chalice at Molesend JW. Another super sound girl who pushed hard here. Dark eye giving her a melting expression that I could look at all day. She was shown today in excellent condition and used to her advantage on the move. A level topline held nice with a merrily carried stern.
